System Administrator to join reNEW

We are seeking a System Administrator for our Research Institute

The role of the system administrator is to ensure daily operations and to support researchers from our center working on fundamental biological mechanisms and translational outcomes - the Novo Nordisk Foundation Centre for Stem Cell Medicine (reNEW) - with expertise in administration and management of our research IT infrastructure as well as support activities associated with it. The advertised job is an exciting opportunity for strong candidates with a background in sysadmin and computing to establish themselves in the field of biological research. 

The Center:

The Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Stem Cell Medicine, reNEW has its Hub at UCPH as well as nodes at UCPH, MCRI and LUMC. Researchers within reNEW addresses fundamental questions in stem cell and developmental biology and will pivot research findings to clinical outcomes and products for patients with incurable disorders such as congenital kidney and heart disorders, type 1 diabetes, Parkinsons’ disease.

We are seeking a highly motivated and ambitious candidate to join the institute as a sysadmin specialist with a focus on user support, system development, monitoring and maintenance. In addition to the storage infrastructure provided by KU-IT (network drives, etc.), the institute currently has its own server (DL580, 120 CPU cores, 4 GPUs RTX8000, RedHat) hosted by KU-IT, as well as several imaging workstations and access to the national High-Performance Computing infrastructure (Computerome 2). Groups at reNEW are seeing a steady increase in genomics-based and imaging-based experiments with evolving technologies generating datasets of increasing sizes which massively benefit from input and advice by the combined expertise of the genomics, imaging and computational platforms. The institutes computing resource will grow and diversify accepting new challenges. Guiding this process will be an important aspect of the future development of the job role.

The research SysAdmin will be an active and collaborating member of the scientific platforms team and report directly to the head of platforms. 

Job description

The role of the sysadmin is to ensure daily operations of the institute. The tasks include:

  • Server and workstations administration and improvement
  • Networks and data storage in collaboration with IT specialist and KU-IT
  • Teaching and supporting researchers with data infrastructure and server based computing
  • Design and support of future computing resources at reNEW Copenhagen and in collaboration with our Leiden/Melbourne reNEW sister sites

Your profile

  • A bachelor or master’s degree in computer science, bioinformatics, computational biology, or appropriate computational field.
  • Strong experience in Linux/UNIX computing environment
  • Strong interest in user support and training
  • Experience with resource management tool would be a plus
  • Experience in Python maintenance, bioconda, modules would be a plus
  • Team-oriented communication style and ability to connect to scientists from different fields             
  • Good English communication skills, both oral and written, are required.
  • Ability to connect and actively participate in an exchange with other IT platforms nationally and internationally

Employment conditions

The employment is a permanent position and is scheduled to start in April/May 2022 or upon agreement with the chosen candidate. The place of work is at DanStem, University of Copenhagen, Blegdamsvej 3B, Copenhagen. Salary, pension and terms of employment are in accordance with the provisions of the collective agreement between the Danish Government and AC (the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations).

In addition to the basic salary, a monthly contribution to a pension fund is added (17.1% of the salary).

The employment will be as Research Consultant (Specialkonsulent) with the possibility of negotiating a qualification supplement depending on experience and qualifications and with 17.1 % pension contribution. The working hours are 37 hours a week.
