Debut for reNEW at People’s Political Meeting – Folkemødet

Outreach

reNEW’s participation at the biggest political meeting in Denmark with more than 40.000 guests turned out to be a success. reNEW was lucky to be invited from the organisers of the meeting to be part of the newly established art area and exhibited the ARTxSCIENCE Exhibition which was located at a very central place with lots of people passing by.

On top of the exhibition reNEW arranged four public dialogue meetings,  two of them in collaboration with the Novo Nordisk Foundation and Copenhagen University. The focus of the dialogues was how stem cell treatment has the potential to be a huge game changer for patients, the healthcare system and the medical industry. As part of the dialogues, reNEW had invited patients living with incurable diseases to share their hopes and dreams which is why a big thank you goes out to badminton legend Poul Erik Høyer and Jytte Ryde for taking time to join reNEW on Bornholm. A special focus was on Parkinson’s and inflammatory bowel diseases as the patients represented each one of these.

reNEW Copenhagen’s own researchers Professor and Node Director Kim Bak Jensen and Associate Professor Agnete Kirkeby participated in the dialogue meetings speaking about the exiting ongoing stem cell research and how far the research has come to be able to help transform people’s lives. The turn up at all meetings exceeded expectations and all had an engaged crowd of guests who were eager to ask questions.

“It has been fantastic being at People’s Political Meeting representing reNEW. It’s a place where we can meet our stakeholders, policymakers, people from the regulatory authorities and the health care system and the general public.  So having all these people in one place provides a unique opportunity for us to communicate and build relations with them. We will definitely participate in this meeting again, says Kim Bak Jensen.

People’s Political Meeting – Folkemødet is a democracy festival that seeks to diminish distance and enhance trust between citizens and decision-makers. Encouraging dialogue and cooperation between citizens, businesses, NGO’s, IGO’s, and politicians. The three-day festival is the highlight of the Danish political calendar which takes place each year in June. Three out of four parliamentarians are attending the meeting whereas half of the participants are private people.
